Things Non Readers Say.

Hey Guys!

Today I wanted to do a post on ‘Thing’s Non -Readers Say’ and do little responses to them. I guarantee you have all heard most of these throughout the years. I sometimes think Non-Readers think us readers are almost like mythical creatures. We can’t be normal right to want to sit and read a book all the time?

nerd

This is the one I get the most and my response is ‘and?’. Who cares if I like to read? It amazes me that ‘nerd’ is supposed to be such a derogatory comment at school I would let it get to me and I wouldn’t read in school because of it but now I think back and think why?

already read that

Most probably I have yes. I love to re-read books just like you like to watch your favourite TV show or movie over and over? No matter how many times I read a book I can still enjoy it as much as the first time… cough* Harry Potter*

something better

This one is what gets me most because who has the audacity to tell you what you can and can’t spend your wages on? I work hard for my money so I of course will spend it where I see fit. I enjoy reading, I would much rather spend my money on books than constantly going shopping for the latest fashion trend.

movies

Nooo they’re not. Books have so much more depth to them and by reading the book you get the experience the world as the author intended. No movie will be exactly the same to a book because of time constraints and the directors own vision may differ to the authors. Once again I would definitely advise people read Harry Potter as well as just watching the movies because there is so much more in the books!

study

Nope. I don’t fancy being a teacher. Whilst I think the profession is amazing and I like the idea of getting kids to fall back into love with reading it just really isn’t for me. Me studying English wasn’t so I could become a teacher but more because I love books. My biggest dream would be to get a job in publishing.

library

And Bookstores! I love to spend time in a library and be surrounded by books. I could spend hours looking at the new selections they have on offer!

i dont have time.png

This one is usually thrown out there as a sort of insult. As if you have all the spare time in the world, but hey I studied for my degree and have a part-time job and manage to read so… Everybody has time to read they just use their time differently. Hey non-reader whilst you spend time scrolling through Facebook and instagram or watching TV I decide to pick up a book to read a few pages.

So there are a few things I have found non-readers say a lot! If you have any yourself let me know in the comments. I would love to hear the ones you get faced with!

  1. Yikes, I hate all those stupid remarks! I also got, “you could be doing something useful instead of reading” or “once you’ve read a book from a genre, you’ve read them all” or “be more social and go out there, or you’ll end up living with cats and they’ll eat you when you die”…

    1. Oh my gosh the cat one. Also love how reading means we aren’t sociable at all. Reading has introduced me to people I never would of met without my blog, even though were spread all over the world and may not know each other as meeting face to face in a shop! “useful instead of reading” like what. It’s your downtime, the people who say that must not go on any social media or anything either because then they wouldn’t be doing anything ‘useful’ themselves! Thanks for sharing Donna šŸ™‚

  2. I LOVE this post so much, I could relate to it a LOT. I’m thankful to be surrounded by a family of readers for the most part and my friends know I’m a big, big reader but it’s so annoying whenever someone actually makes these kind of remarks. I especially hate how people say they don’t have time to read – to be honest, if I did not MAKE time, I wouldn’t have the time either, but well, we can do loads of things if we actually put our minds to it šŸ˜€

    1. I love that you are surrounded by a family of readers and that you can all share that love! I’m trying to get my family more into reading, I got my brother to read a book last month, it was a autobiography of a footballer but he never reads and he’s 30. I feel so proud of myself for it! As you also say, we make time to read and it’s frustrating when other’s act as if we have all the time in the world and they don’t. We just use our time differently!

  3. No, I had one girl in my class always tell me I was “so weird” because I actually liked reading. Ridiculous, a person who read because they actually enjoyed it. Foreign concept to her, apparently. I always used to get “why don’t you at like a normal teenager?” too. God these are so relatable. Great post!

    1. Thank you Cate! It’s so frustrating being faced with comments like that, I always wondered what they classed as a normal teenager? Is there a set norm we must follow?

  4. I get this post so much! There’s hardly any people in my life who read like I do so I get these comments a lot. One that I hate is ‘do you not get bored?’. I mean obviously not because I LIKE READING. It’s so offensive how some people think that just because you read you must have all the time in the world…it’s so ridiculous!

  5. I can relate to this so much! I’ve heard the “Why don’t you spend your money on something better?” question way too many times from friends who aren’t readers. That along with “But reading is boring!” and then there’s me sitting here in the middle of a high action book that I can’t put down wondering how in the world reading is boring lol. I always end up telling people who make comments about my reading that they just need to find that book for them. I’m a firm believer that there’s at least one book out there for everyone. Great post!! šŸ˜Š

    1. Thank you Melissa! I genuinely don’t get how people can say reading is boring like you say, the worlds it can take you too are phenomenal! I agree that there is a book out there for everyone, I just think some are too lazy to give it a try!

  6. Such a relatable post! I think the time and money ones are the questions that get to me the most. We’re all busy and it’s about making the time to read. -____- And the people that usually ask me about why I “waste my money” tend to have questionable buys themselves in my eyes, lol. XD

    1. Exactly! It’s amazing really that people think they can question what we spend our money on. I wouldn’t dream of telling someone they waste the money they’ve worked hard on earning!
