Review 

 

I went in blind to The Thousandth Floor, not knowing much about it. Exactly how I like to go into any book, so I can experience it with a clear mind and not have many assumptions and I was pleasantly surprised!

The Thousandth Floor is set in New York 2118 in a technological advanced tower which holds malls, single and double floored flats and even the new Central Park. It’s such an interesting concept and kind of reminded me of Wall-E for a moment (don’t laugh.) So Wall-E shows the population having to leave the earth because it was un-habitual and they then live in a technologically advanced space craft, well that is what the New York Citizens do except this life is a whole lot grandeur. The world outside the tower is still lived in, but the tower offers a whole new level of living.

The beginning of the book starts with us, the reader, being informed that someone has fallen from the top of the tower however we never learn who instead the book then details the last two months leading up to this event. I really enjoyed the mystery of this however you have a LOT of information thrown at you because there are a fair few characters and this book follows a multiple point of view narrative. This was something I wasn’t that big a fan off, because there was so many characters, I felt like there was too much going on because they were all off doing their own thing. Looking at it the other way, I suppose because of the large number of characters it means there are  many potential victims?!

Outside of the mystery this book features a whole host of other plots from shock reveals of fathers being revealed, romance drama, drug dealing, rehabilitation from drug abuse and more. All of which made me think of this book as very Gossip Girl Esque, the characters remind me a lot of the characters in the TV Show but also the issues they face.

Did I see the ending coming? Nope. I thought I did but Katharine shocked me and took it a whole new way and the victim wasn’t who I expect at all. It kills me when I write spoiler free reviews because I hate the idea of spoiling something for anyone so i’m going to be cryptic and those who have read this will understand and those who won’t have read it will find out. One character, IS MANIPULATIVE AS HELL. She was such a psycho, I couldn’t even describe her any other way other than perhaps a nightmare?!

Finally it also worth noting that this book ended on a cliffhanger of sorts. I need that second book in my life now so that I can see what happens next and if there is any justice going to be served.

The characters of The Thousandth Floor were all really developed due to the multiple POV. My favourites had to be Avery and Atlas, I was rooting for them from the beginning, there was just something about them.
The character of Avery herself is really interesting, Avery was genetically designed to be perfect by her parents, whilst everyone commented how beautiful she was. You could see how it got to her. How she didn’t feel ‘perfect.’

In terms of relationships as we have multiple POV we have LGBTQ representation, slow burning romances and so much tension between characters. Outside of the relationship spectrum Lena is a very interesting character, she is stalkerish but she also represents the addict of the group after returning home from rehab we get to see Lena trying to battle through this addiction and being back home but she replaces her drug addiction with another addiction, an addiction for Atlas. A very interesting character dynamic to say the least.

The setting for The Thousandth Floor is New York 2118, an extremely technological advanced age. The actual setting itself is within the Tower which is extremely futuristic as well, the bottom floors of the tower is where the poor people live and the very top the very rich. Therefore as the floors go up, the tech side gets more and more advanced.

In terms of rating, The Thousandth Floor was a 4 star read for me. I really enjoyed the plot and narrative but I felt like their was too many characters within the multiple POV. Whilst it helped to create this technological world, I struggled to keep up because each character was off doing their own thing and meeting even more people to the point where I was beginning to feel frustrated. Outside of this, the plot leaves you with a feeling of suspense and I need the second book after that cliff hanger.
