Today I wanted to come at you with a list of some of my most Anticipated 2017 Releases. I am so excited for all of these books to come out so I can continue on with the series they are from or delve into new worlds.
Goodreads Summary; To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all.
To All The Boys I Loved Before is one of those books you will have seen all over Instagram, Goodreads and Booktube. I sure saw it everywhere before I finally bit the bullet and picked it up for myself and I can safely say I am so glad I finally did. I can understand the hype which surrounded this book especially when its sequel was released in May 2015 as it is an interesting concept on a romance story.
Firstly the form of the book itself is worth noting as I considered it really interesting as it features the letters Lara Jean writes to each boy therefore this adds a unique element to the form by breaking up the prose, as well as allowing us to see glimpses into Lara Jean’s past and the person she was when she composed those letters in comparison to the person she is in the present.
Although I ultimately enjoyed my reading experience of this book, I did struggle to get into it at the beginning as the first 70 pages seemed to drag. Nothing seemed to happen other than they introduced the reader to Lara Jean’s character and her family structure, however after page 70 things did begin to get more interesting.
In terms of characters I couldn’t stand Kitty and Margot, while I understand that they are sisters and personally I have a sister of my own therefore I related to the dynamics of their relationship to some extent, I found Margot in particular to be very stand offish and overbearing and she was too judgmental for me to like as a character. Although I understand that a sudden big change (I won’t be a spoiler sue) in her life at a young age may have resulted in her to act in such a manner therefore this may be our explanation to why she is like that. In terms of Kitty’s character she was just rather annoying.
The ending itself was a cliff-hanger of sorts and rather shocking for me, I had expected it to end in a different way however it took a different turn therefore this was a major plus as it had the ability to suddenly shock me with its twist and I realized it wasn’t as predictable as I may have thought. The ending itself offers resolution between Lara Jean and her sisters however we do not see resolution between Peter and Lara Jean therefore giving the sense that the sequel will cover this.
Ultimately I give To All The Boys I Loved Before a rating of 4/4.5 stars it is an interesting and exciting romance read suitable for any Young Adult book lover and it follows a unique concept with the incorporation of the letters setting it apart from a standard romance story. It just dropped short of a 5 star read for me due to my struggle to get into the book at the beginning.
