As Halloween is only 5 days away, I wanted to do a post on my Top Ten Villains and it was actually rather hard to choose because there are few which I thought about but then after really thinking about the series they come from I realised that actually others stand out just a little more in different ways. I haven’t put these in a specific order because I can’t decide who would be my ultimate favourite villain. Here are my Top Ten Villains from Young Adult Series.
Left to Right – Bellatrix | President Snow | Jeannine Matthews | Umbridge | Amarantha
Bellatrix Lestrange
Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling
I bet you were thinking I would put Voldemort didn’t you? Well no. Whilst Voldemort is obviously the main man, for me Bellatrix is such an interesting Villain. I love to hate her character because she seems so deliriously evil and she thrives of it. She is also a complex character because she has this yearning to please Voldemort constantly.
President Snow
The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
President Snow is a ruthless tyrant. He has no compassion and will gladly watch the districts children die every year in the games. He lives for the games and watching the torture of the participants, a quick death wouldn’t be merely as entertaining. He is sadistic, greedy, cruel and truly evil.
Jeanine Matthews
Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth
Jeanine Matthews is our female dystopian villain of this list. She is an intellectual villain as she holds the highest IQ in Erudite. Jeanine pretty much wants a perfect society under a totalitarian regime run by Erudite and as their leader ultimately, her.
Dolores Umbridge
Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling
URGH. SHE IS THE WORST. Umbridge would most definitely be high up on my villains list, I don’t love to hate her. I simply hate her. For me she is worse than Voldemort, she is manipulative and pure evil but she hides it through politics and rules.
Amarantha
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J.MAAS
Amarantha is one of my favourite, favourite villains. She was so interesting to read in ACOTAR. She is feared by so many, she is cruel, powerful and brutal. She loved to torture and torment her victims whether they be fae or human. It was also interesting how she held her court under the mountain so they could not leave and how she placed a curse on the Autumn Court so they could not remove their masks.
Maven Calore
Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard
When we first met Maven and his true nature began to come out I was like…
Maven is a villain who was somewhat created due to his mothers actions as now he can’t distinguish between what are his thoughts and what are put there by his mother. I was rooting for Maven romantically in the story and then he had to just rip my heart out and be evil. Maven is malicious, manipulative and will stab you in the back.
The Darkling
Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
The Darkling is again such an interesting and complex villain. He is one who is romanticized at first until you realize that he has lived for a considerable amount of time, he is super powerful, and authoritative. He is also super manipulative yet somewhat irresistible because he is personal and romantic. There is a real darkness to The Darkling and his powers can create mythic creatures of darkness.
Valentine
The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
Whilst I think Sebastian is definitely a villain worth mentioning from The Mortal Instruments Series he is also literally a demon whereas Valentine acts on his ideologies. He is so warped and another type of evil when he suggests Clary and Jace are siblings? Like that was a new one for the books. He messed with them psychologically as well.
Arobynn Hamel
Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J.MAAS
Also known as the King of Assassins, Arobynn Hamel was an interesting villain to read. He is just so cunning, harsh and manipulating. One moment from the book which sticks with me is how he trained Celaena and his methods. For example when he found out Celaena’s swordmanship was lacking in her left hand he gave her two options; she either break her right hand or he will break it for her.
Lucius Malfoy
Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling
If I’m honest Lucius would be low on the villains list but I also love to hate him. I feel like Lucius was just following the crowd, he always seemed so cowardly when he was questioned or confronted and he would try to run away. Overall he was just an excessive pretentious ass. (sorry)
I think it’s such a good tie amongst Jeannie And Umbridge 😂😂😂😂.

Umbridge would definitely be on mine as well!
Although I have to add that I admire the actress enormously! It takes a lot of skill to make everyone hate a character THAT much and boy did I hate her in the movie as well.

I totally agree with everyone on your list! I actually strongly dislike Maven, I appreciate him as a villain but unlike a lot of fans I do not think he will suddenly change and be a god guy, nor do I want him to. I would actually add a TV show character (I know, but he is just such a good villain), Uther Pendragon from Merlin, because he is just the worst.

I don’t think he will suddenly become a good guy either, I found it really interesting how his mother created him into being such a way though as well. I like the struggle you see in his character dealing with that. I always hated him as well!
Thanks for reading!

Ahahahaha oh that GIF you picked out for Maven, well…that was me, exactly, while reading Red Queen hahahah. It’s just so accurate, I love it. Also,… yeah, I really, really, really can’t stand him. I just read the first two books in the series, though, I didn’t love Glass Sword so I haven’t gone on with it all afterwards. Did you read the whole series – well, all the books that have been released?
Also, yes to all the villains here – especially Umbridge. She is THE worst.
Great list, Hannah! ❤ ❤

Maybe Queen Levana (from the Lunar Chronicles series, I haven’t read all the books yet, but she seems like a very interesting villain)

I loved Amarantha as a villain, she was just so EVIL… I kinda wish she had survived after the ACOTAR book so we could see more of her in the next ones! Is that a bad thing to say??

Noo! Because I agree. I always think I wonder what would have happened if she had survived and we saw more of her? I think it would have been so interesting!
