Book Collections – How Does Yours Look?

Bookstagram, Book Tube, Book Blogs – you name it I’m constantly stalking it and I always wonder about everyone’s book collections. A lot of people especially big booktubers seem to have what I would call the ‘Perfect Book Collection.’ By this I mean that it all seems to match, they have all hardback books which seem to be all perfect in size and fit perfectly together. I do like to imagine that it is only certain shelves, the ones on camera and then if you could see the other side you would have the shelves of the mismatched.

Me? I’m the Mix and Match book collector. Unless I buy a series around the same time then rarely do my covers match or are the same heights and I’m also a series un-finisher… For example I own the first few Vampire Academy books by Richelle Mead and then I finished the rest on my kindle so I don’t own the rest of the series in physical form. One day I would love to but I have a tiny bedroom which is on the back of my sister and my  3-year-old nieces bedroom. Basically we have one door then I walk through their bedroom to get to mine. I’ve managed to cram a little bookcase in my room, next to my wardrobe so ultimatelly I can’t own every single book although I’m dreaming for a future library like Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

Whenever I buy books I also go for the cheaper option rather than the matching option. However I understand completely that some people have to have matching covers and heights due to OCD or other reasons, for them it can be really upsetting if it is different. I am in no way shaming these people for having ‘perfect’ shelves, I just find it interesting to talk about book collections and what type of collector you may be.  People can spend there money however they like, I just want to reiterate that this isn’t an attack on anyone, it’s a discussion on what type of books people like to buy and how their collection looks 🙂

Personally the only thing that I have to do to my book collection is make sure I try not to snap the spine. Even though it shows me how much I love the book obviously, it just is something I don’t like to do. If it happens I curse myself a little then move on, but really I try to keep it as neat as possible.

How do you arrange your books?

As mentioned because I have a small room and I have a small bookshelf so I try to make it look pleasing but mainly I have to double stack my books. I also have a drawer under my bed which I also keep books in. I would love to have a shelf like this one day;

For me because my room is small I have 3 shelves really to work with. I have to use the bottom one for my Harry Potter Collection that’s for sure. I have all my Potter related things on that shelf including Funko Pops, colouring books and guides such as The Artifact Vault. By the way comment below if anybody would ever like me to do a post on the Harry Potter Books I own which are linked to the world such as The Artifact Vault or Film Wizardry.

The other two shelves on my book-case are for new books I need to read and series such as The Mortal Instruments, A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, Lady Midnight, Twilight etc. Old and New favourite series.

New or Old, E-book or Paperback?

As mentioned Mix and Matched is my style. I read both E-books on my kindle and also Paperbacks and hardback. I love to buy Old/used copies of books but I usually do this when they are for my university course. If they are for my personal reading habits then I try to look for books which are ‘Like New’. Oh the deals you can get shopping the used sections on Amazon or Abe Books guys! I once got a first edition hardback signed by the author Laini Taylor for a steal of £2. That’s what I like to call Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner. (Reign in the british humour Hannah)

So let me know below What does your book collection look like? What sort of book collector are you?

  2. This is such a fun post, Hannah 🌸
I’m the same with spines; I hate when I accidentally crack the spine, my mum always does it when she borrows a book and it drives me crazy 🙈
I’d love to own all hardcover books, they look so neat and pretty on a shelf, but unfortunately they’re just way too expensive over here! I also only have a tiny shelf where my books are organised by series and then chronologically by author and then the rest are ebooks 💖

    1. My mum too! Hardbacks are so expensive, I buy them when their on a super good deal but otherwise I don’t buy hardbacks often. Paperbacks feel so comfy in my small hands haha!
Thank you for reading Michelle! You are super organised, chronologically? It’s like a little library! I love it.

  3. Ohhh this is such a great post, and a very interesting discussion, Hannah! 🙂 While I would LOVE to have these kind of “perfect” bookshelves, mine are always a mix of paperbacks and hardcovers. They are mostly paperbacks, since it’s less expensive, I only buy hardcovers for favorite authors of mine, when I just can’t wait for the paperback edition to be released, so… everything is mixed. At the moment, I have one big shelf that’s color-coordinated and…overflowing with books, Funko Pop! and also a couple of travel guides in there, and the rest of my room is just… books everywhere, not really put together neatly because I just try and put them where I can hahahaha. Perfect bookshelves are a dream for sure, but I also like a bit of mix and match, makes it all more fun and…alive, somehow? 😛

    1. Thanks for reading Marie. Once again i’m the same as you, I prefer paperbacks really because it’s so much cheaper and they are easier to handle. Oo colour co-orindated, that sounds lovely, I don’t know if I could ever do that though because I like series to all be together.

It is so nice to hear you say ‘book’s everywhere’ because basically that is my room. Now my bookshelf is full I have this pile starting just on the floor in front of them. The new pile.. Ah book buying problems?!

      1. I like series to be together as well and…I’m not going to lie, sometimes it is a pain to try and find books 😂 but it looks pretty…but I might change everything soon 😂
SAME here. I have piles of books in front of bookshelves, on the desk and in front of my bed…soon I’ll sleep with all of them 😂

  4. I would love to have shelves like the ones you pictured (though I don’t know if I could actually have rainbow shelves since I wouldn’t have my series together) but alas. Some of my shelves look really neat since the books are the same size (or I managed to hide that with plushies and Pop Funkos and the like haha) but others.. Especially my Rick Riordan shelf really annoys me since they’re not the same size. Let’s hope one day we’ll all have a library like Belle 😀

  5. This is a very interesting post! I have to admit I don’t put a lot of thought into the type of book I buy. I will say that I can’t read e-books, for me nothing will ever be as good as holding a real book in my hands and seeing it on my shelf! I do tend to have favourite cover art, so if there is a series I love (like harry potter) I will try and get the same cover art for each book. I also like having series together, I wouldn’t split them up just to make my shelf look pretty, though I do acknowledge that colour ordering can look super cool!

    1. Thank you for reading! If i’m honest I could never read e-books as well, I struggled so much up until I went to university and then my backpack got so heavy and I was commuting in so I got myself a kindle and forced myself and since then – never turned back! 🙂 The Rainbow colour order does look so pleasing and pretty but like you I couldn’t split my series up!

  6. Great post! I like to buy hardback books because I hate creased spines too! Although paperback is easier to read (and carry around), most of my books are hardcover. Right now all my books are packed due to a recent move, but when I did have them out on shelves, I organized by genre and then by author. I also separated them into two sections: the books I’ve read and the books I haven’t read. This helps me keep track of which books I still need to read. As for series, I’m not much for reading series. If I were, I’d put them together. Due to space, I double stack books too. When I double stack, they have to be the same size so they fit neatly together. 😀 I’m not much for the coloring method although it does look nice in videos. But to me that’s too unorganized and it would be hard for me to find the book I need…mostly if I couldn’t remember what color the cover was! LOL

    1. Congratulations on your recent move! Hope it all went well and that you have fun unpacking and reorganising all your books 🙂 I agree 100%, whilst it is pretty it does feel so impractical. Well it would be for me, I would forget all the time what colour it was and would get stressed series weren’t together!
Thank you for reading and sharing your opinion 🙂
